Final Writing Assignment

Digital media, as new artistic medium, is still working to gain the respect that the more traditional mediums hold.  Too often the capabilities of digital media are underestimated, yet when really explored the power of this new digital medium surpass those of the traditional drawing and painting.  Through my situational tour I experienced the digital medium first hand, which opened my eyes to this new medium.
The digital medium unlike traditional mediums provides opportunity for for things that otherwise would be impossible, like completely altering the color scheme of a picture or adding something to a picture that was not in the actual photo. These examples of digital design hardly even touch the possibilities that the digital medium holds.  For me I feel that the biggest difference in the digital media is that it has the capacity to create exactly what you want, the only limitations are those of the artists creativity.   Digital media opens up an entirely new world and perspective on self expression, and aspects of your work that were difficult to convey can now be illustrated to depict the exact experience and feelings felt at the time the picture was taken.  Doing my situational tour in the metro I felt that the digital media made it the pictures come to life, just by looking at the pictures I could hear the trains rushing through the tunnels, the crowds of people conversing, and even smell the damp air.  Which is something I sometimes struggle with in my drawings.
While at times it can be frustrating because of the complications of technology the digital medium takes artistic capabilities to a whole new level and is an extraordinary artistic medium that still has so much to be discovered.

A Ride to Rosslyn

Above the ground the Day is full of color,
life is bright, and brilliant.

Stepping on to the moving staircase,
the bright world is left behind,
pulling you into a new world below.

down, down, down,
the decent seems to take forever,
lower and lower
 beneath it all.
Life is still moving as it does above the surface,
as the crowds rush
up and down,
too impatient for the slow and steady pace of the overworked escalators

A final short ride brings you to the bottom,
screeching and rushing
wind lets you know the train is here,
a final scatter to catch the ride.
You better hurry,
because there is work being done,
and the delays are unruly.
Finally emerging from the tunnel
 are beams of light,
lights begin to flash alerting those
of the long awaited train.

The crowd has grow as a result of the elapsed time,
the people seem to glide down to the platform,
the escalator is hidden.
Rushing,
 pushing,
 competing,
the escalator is in high demand,
everything is frantic.

Almost there...
the methodic movements of the train,
calm the anxiety the trip has built,
next stop
 Rosslyn.
Below the ground the colors seem gray,
A world contained
by the weight from above,
gray yet hectic
 there are still great wonders.

Finally,
3rd largest in world,
an amazing site hidden from above,
disguised as being solely a tool,
it is a work of art,
a giant mountain inviting you
up,
up,
up.
There is no rush here,
just humans one with the machine,
riding down and up like statues,
a single moment of peace in a busy day.
lighting the incessant steps climb repeatedly,
stopping for no-one.
The moment is over,
once again the rush of life returns,
blurring past, taking you back to reality.
Emerging from the grey and yellow,
the bright colors re-appear,
...............
one last ride completes the journey.

Rosslyn Metro Station -
I chose the Rosslyn metro station as my location because the metro represents a daily ritual for so many who live and work in the city.  The metro is used by all varieties of people and is a defining characteristic of DC.  All of the metro stations have escalators which vary in length, width, placement, etc. Thus i narrowed my exploration of the metro to focus on the escalators, leading me to choose the Rossyln station because it contains the largest escalator in DC, and the 3rd largest in the world! The entire metro system, and particularly the escalators represent the ritual relationship of man and machine.  Thus in my journey I intend to capture this relationship as well as the feeling and the experience of riding the metro.
